草莓传媒官网下载 alumna Melissa Thiel is leading an effort to install a historical marker for the lynching of George Hughes and the Sherman Riot of 1930. Thiel鈥檚 effort to commemorate Sherman鈥檚 painful past has stalled 鈥� caught between resistance by some of the town鈥檚 White leaders and a rising desire among residents to confront old racial wounds.
Although she has approached her project with a certain indomitability, 鈥淚 picked a doozy,鈥� Thiel said. 鈥淚 was naive, and I didn鈥檛 think the pushback I鈥檇 get would get to this level.鈥�

Thiel earned her master's in history and was part of 草莓传媒官网下载's public history program.

A group of 草莓传媒官网下载 students found a path to healing following the death of George Floyd when they formed TRIBE: A Black Student Support Group. The new, safe and confidential space allowed students to 鈥渃elebrate blackness and express themselves fully in community,鈥� as well as to discuss police brutality, racial inequality and the various emotions that would arise.
