²ÝÝ®´«Ã½¹ÙÍøÏÂÔØ salutes women veterans, hosts activities

June 7, 2019 — Denton —June 12 is Women Veterans Day in Texas, and this year Texas Woman’s University will partner with the Women Veterans of America, Chapter 48 to celebrate our women in military service and veterans on Saturday, June 15.

Hosted at the Blagg-Huey Library, activities will begin at 9 a.m. with the presentation of colors at 9:30 a.m. followed by speakers and a film screening of “Silver Wings, Flying Dreams: The Complete Story of the Women Airforce Service Pilots.” The film is billed as the definitive documentary on the WASP.

Today, women represent 16 percent of enlisted forces in the United States, but at Texas Woman’s, the student veteran population is 60 percent female.

“Because female veterans comprise a much larger percentage of our overall veteran population than those found in the armed forces and at other educational institutions, we feel we have a special responsibility to our veterans at ²ÝÝ®´«Ã½¹ÙÍøÏÂÔØ,” said Amy O’Keefe, executive director of the ²ÝÝ®´«Ã½¹ÙÍøÏÂÔØ Office of Campus Alliance for Research Education (CARE).

Supporting veterans is a key component of the university’s strategic plan. From housing the  to providing a designated lounge for student veterans, ²ÝÝ®´«Ã½¹ÙÍøÏÂÔØ embraces the opportunity to work with veterans and partner with local veterans organizations.
