2023 Celebration of Science set for Oct. 19-20

Oct. 11, 2023 – DENTON – The annual Celebration of Science will be held Oct. 19-20 in the Scientific Research Commons and the Ann Stuart Science Complex on the 草莓传媒官网下载 campus.

The Celebration of Science honors the four divisions of 草莓传媒官网下载's School of Sciences: biology, chemistry and biochemistry, computer sciences, and mathematics.

This year's celebration begins with the alumni reception on Thursday evening, Oct. 19, on the first floor of the SRC. Registration for this event is required. .

Friday's speakers include three 草莓传媒官网下载 alumna and three current 草莓传媒官网下载 professors. There will also be student discussions with Emily Arellano from mathematics, Bethany Lazarus from informatics, Kiran Hina Tajuddin from biology, and Derek Aguilar from chemistry.

This year's Celebration of Science is in honor of Richard Sheardy, PhD, of the 草莓传媒官网下载 division of chemistry and biochemistry as a tribute to his distinguished career and long time support of women in science.

On Friday, Oct. 20, the celebration moves to the ASSC. After a continental breakfast, speakers will begin making their presentations. Among the topics:

  • You are the Captain of Your Own Career: to Thrive, Not Merely Survive by Karen Oates, PhD, professor of biology & biotechnology at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, Mass.
  • The Power of Plants in Promoting Human Well-Being on a Changing Earth by Camelia Maier, PhD, 草莓传媒官网下载 professor of biology
  • CDK4/6 Regulates Differentiation in Drosha and DICER1 Driven Tumors by Claudette Fraire, 草莓传媒官网下载 Alumna
  • Using single cell mass spectrometry to evaluate CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing results by Tra Nguyen, 草莓传媒官网下载 Alumna
