March 12, 2019 鈥擠ENTON鈥� U.S. Congresswomen Sylvia Garcia and Kay Granger will speak at Texas Woman鈥檚 University鈥檚 fourth annual Jamison Lecture, beginning at 7 p.m., March 21 on the university鈥檚 Denton campus. The lecture, titled 鈥淲omen on the Rise: Reflections on the 2018 Election,鈥� will take place in Margo Jones Performance Hall on Pioneer Circle. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia is the U.S. Representative for Texas' 29th congressional district. A member of the Democratic Party, she previously represented District 6 in the Texas Senate. Garcia is the first Hispanic member of the Houston Congressional Delegation and one of the first two Latinas to represent the State of Texas in the U.S. Congress.

Congresswoman Kay Granger is the U.S. Representative for Texas鈥� 12th congressional district. Granger previously served two terms as Fort Worth鈥檚 first woman mayor, and she is the first Republican woman to represent Texas in the U.S. House of Representatives. Granger has been elected to the Texas Women鈥檚 Hall of Fame and the Fort Worth Business Hall of Fame.

Jennifer Lawless, Ph.D., Commonwealth Professor of Politics at the University of Virginia, has authored or co-authored six books, including Women on the Run: Gender, Media, and Political Campaigns in a Polarized Era and It Still Takes a Candidate: Why Women Don鈥檛 Run for Office.

About the Jamison Lecture

In 2014, the Jamison estate donated $1.7 million to 草莓传媒官网下载 to fund the Jamison lecture and other university needs. The Jamisons were longtime supporters of 草莓传媒官网下载 and members of 草莓传媒官网下载鈥檚 Old Main Society. Alonzo Jamison served seven terms in the Texas State Legislature before joining 草莓传媒官网下载 faculty in 1968. During his tenure, he became chair of the 草莓传媒官网下载 Department of History and Government before retiring in 1984. He passed away in 2011. His wife, Elizabeth Jamison, received a bachelor鈥檚 degree in music from the Texas State College for Women, now 草莓传媒官网下载, in 1943. She died in 2009.
