Biography

Dr. Verdín’s research examines how colorism, nativism, and gendered racism are experienced by Mexican-origin families. She uses Chicana feminisms and critical race theory to interrogate how identity, knowledge, and racialization processes among Mexican Americans are shaped by Whiteness ideology, settler-colonialism, and the erasure of Indigenous ancestry. Dr. Verdín teaches graduate courses in Family Changes and Diversity, Research and Issues in Family Science, Advanced Lifespan Development, and Research Methods. Dr. Verdín currently co-chairs an ad hoc committee on Intersectional Feminism Teaching for the Feminism and Family Studies section of the National Council on Family Relations (NCFR). In 2020, she received the NCFR John L. and Harriette P. McAdoo Dissertation award for her dissertation, Mothering while Brown: Latina borderland mothers’ experiences of epistemic injustice.
